Nom Pang— Cambodian Style Tri-Tip Sandwich

I know many of you may be wondering what the difference between ‘nom pang’ and ‘banh mi’ are— they actually BOTH mean ‘bread’ !! Nom Pang is Cambodian and Banh Mi is Vietnamese . They both French-influenced baguette sandwiches that have similar ingredients, but what sets them apart is how you prepare the meat !

Today I am showing you how I prepared this delicious cambodian style smoked tri-tip nom pang that you need to try it for yourself ! It’s smokey, sweet, savory, zesty, and spicy ! This is definitely a longer recipe, but I promise it’s sooo worth it . Let’s just say, if I ever had a pop-up, this sandwich would be on the menu .

What you’ll need:

  • 3lbs tri-tip steak

  • French baguette or bread loaf

  • salt

  • white pepper

  • lemongrass paste or fresh minced lemongrass

  • japanese mayo

  • hot Maggi seasoning

  • white pepper

  • cilantro

  • cucumber

  • shredded carrots

  • sugar

  • vinegar

  • orange juice

  • ultimate dipping sauce

Instructions:

  1. Start off by prepping tri-tip:

-Marinate with salt and lemongrass paste to taste .

Let marinate for at least 1 hour.

-Smoke for at least 6hrs at 250F .

Be sure to hydrate steak with orange juice every hour until cooked through.

-Once steak is cooked to desired doneness, remove and let rest for at least 15 minutes before slicing through.

  2. Prepare Sandwich:

-Slice French baguettes or bread loaf down the middle and toast in an air fryer at 300F for about 5 minutes

Remove some inner bread to make room for fillings.

  3. Quick pickle some shredded carrots by placing shredded carrots into a bowl and letting them soak in distilled vinegar, 1-2 tsps of sugar, and salt. Mix well and set aside .

  4. Once bread us lightly toasted, prepare nom pang:

If using day-old tri-tip, heat up by placing slices on a shallow pan on with some olive oil on medium-heat . Flip continually until slices are toasted and golden to your liking.

-Place toasted bread on a serving plate and add a generous amount of Japanese mayo to one side and spread evenly.

-Drizzle some hot Maggi seasoning and a light dusting of white pepper to the other slice of bread.

-Layer down your sliced smoked tri-tip

-Followed by a few spoonfuls of the ultimate dipping sauce right on top.

-Add a generous amount of fresh cilantro, sliced cucumbers, and drained “quick pickle” shredded carrots

-Put the sandwich lid on top and ENJOY !

  5. Enjoy right away !
