Garlic Sesame Oil Cabbage

THIS... THIS cabbage recipe is one to bookmark and use for the rest of your life. A side dish so simple, yet hits all the flavor notes you’ll ever need to spruce up a main entree. I call this garlic sesame oil cabbage.; the thing is though, the star of the show isn’t named in the title. Fish sauce is the main secret ingredient, but I dare not say since so many people are afraid of it. Im telling you, DO NOT BE AFRAID OF IT. All you need is a very little bit, and it will change your life forever. Im going to petition to change the name to “fancy umami sauce” instead of the dreaded “fish sauce” lol . You need to try this recipe out; its so simple, yet oh so satisfying. Eat it over a bed of rice, paired with your favorite salmon recipe, or even as an appetizer on its own! When the fish sauce cooks, it turns from stanky to DANKY. Try it with lettuce if there’s no cabbage lying around in your fridge!

What you’ll need:

  • half a head of cabbage

  • 4 large garlic cloves

  • 1 stalk green onions

  • 1 tsp fish sauce

  • 1 tsp sesame oil

  • crush Thai chili flakes (optional)

  • black pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. Start by chopping up garlic cloves and green onions. Set aside

  2. Prep cabbage by rinsing and drying. Cut into bite sized pieces and set aside

  3. To a medium-hot skillet, add 1 tsp olive oil and saute garlic until fragrant. About 30 seconds to 1 minute.

  4. Add in chopped cabbage, followed by fish sauce, sesame oil. chili flakes, and black pepper. Stir fry until cabbage is a little soft, but still has a crunch. About 2-3 minutes.

  5. Transfer cooked cabbage to serving dish and garnish with green onions.

  6. Enjoy right away over a bed of rice and your favorite protein.
